Range Selector Lever Cable Replacement Automatic "Shifter Input and Linkage"
Warning:The automatic transaxle range selector cable is made out oftwo cable sections. After initial connection never separate the twometal couplings from one another. Integrity of the connection ofthe two metal couplings will be lost if separation of the two metalcouplings occurs. When servicing the transaxle remove the cable atthe automatic transaxle range selector lever and at the automatictransaxle range selector cable bracket. If either section of thecable needs to be replaced, replace both of the cable sections.Loss of connection integrity of the two metal couplings can causeloss of transaxle shift control which could result in personalinjury.Position the steering column shift lever to the parkposition.Raise and support the vehicle. Refer toLifting and Jacking the Vehicle.
Remove the clips on the cable from the floor panelreinforcement.
Ensure the transmission manual shaft is positioned inmechanical park.Remove the retainer that secures the cable to thebracket.
Remove the cable clip on the transfer case, ifequipped.Remove the range selector cable end-(2) from thetransmission range selector lever ball stud-(1).Depress the tangs and remove the cable from thebracket.Lower the vehicle.Ensure that the steering column shift lever is still in thepark position.Remove the drivers seat. Refer toFront Seat Removal and Installation - Bucket.Pull back the carpet and insulation around the driver'sarea.Remove the instrument panel knee bolster. Refer toKnee Bolster Replacement.
Remove the retainer securing the cable to the steeringcolumn.
Remove the cable end from the steering column ballstud.Depress the tangs and remove the cable from the steeringcolumn bracket.
Note:Avoid unnecessary twisting/bending of the range selectorcable when removing the cable from the support.Remove the range selector cable from the support.
Remove the cable grommet from the floor panel.Remove the cable from the vehicle.Installation ProcedureInstall the cable to the vehicle.
Install the cable grommet to the floor panel.
Note:Avoid unnecessary twisting/bending of the range selectorcable when installing the cable to the support.Install the range selector cable to the support.Ensure that the transmission manual shaft lever is in themechanical park position.
Install the cable to the steering column bracket.Ensure the tangs fully seat (snap) into the steering columnbracket.Install the cable end to the steering column ballstud.
Install the retainer securing the cable to the steeringcolumn.Position the carpet and insulation around the driver'sarea.Install the drivers seat. Refer toFront Seat Removal and Installation - Bucket.Install the instrument panel knee bolster. Refer toKnee Bolster Replacement.Raise and support the vehicle. Refer toLifting and Jacking the Vehicle.
Align and install the cable to the bracket.Install the range selector cable end-(2) to thetransmission range selector lever ball stud-(1).Install the cable clip on the transfer case, ifequipped.
Install the retainer that secures the cable to thebracket.
Install the clips on the cable to the floor panelreinforcement.Lower the vehicle.Test the transmission for proper shift operation.If all of the gear positions cannot be achieved, adjust thecable. Refer toRange Selector Lever Cable Adjustment.
